Fractions of an Amount — Free KS3 Worksheet

A free KS3 practice worksheet on finding a fraction of an amount: divide by the bottom, multiply by the top. 16 questions graded easy to hard, with a full answer key. Print-ready A4 PDF.

Finding a fraction of an amount is two steps in a fixed order. Divide by the bottom to find one part, then multiply by the top to find how many parts you want. Three quarters of forty: divide by four to get ten, multiply by three to get thirty. The order matters because dividing first keeps the numbers small.

What is on the sheet

Unit fractions first, where only the divide is needed. Then fractions with a top bigger than one, so both steps come into play. The amounts are chosen to divide exactly, so the focus stays on the method rather than on remainders. Later questions use money and quantities, and the word problems at the end hide the fraction inside a sentence about a group of people or a jacket in a sale.

Marking it

The fractions of an amount lesson shows the divide then multiply order on a bar model, so the two steps have somewhere to live.
