Sharing in a ratio is a counting problem before it is a dividing problem. If two people share sixty pounds in the ratio 2 to 3, the first question is how many shares there are in total. Five. Then one share is twelve pounds, and the two of them get twenty four and thirty six. Total shares first, one share next, then hand them out.
What is on the sheet
Two part shares first, with totals that divide exactly. Then three part shares, where the total of the parts is easy to get wrong in a hurry. Later questions give one person's amount and ask for the total, which runs the method backwards and is where a pupil who has learned the steps without the idea will stall. Word problems finish it: two people splitting a sum of money, a bag of sweets, and prize money between friends.

The sharing in a ratio lesson counts the shares out physically before any dividing happens.
