An equation is a balance. Whatever you do to one side you do to the other, and it stays level. That single idea is the whole topic. Taking three off both sides of x plus three equals eight leaves x equals five, and nothing has been remembered, only kept fair.
What is on the sheet
One step equations first, adding and subtracting, then one step where the letter is multiplied. Then two step equations, where the order of the moves is the entire difficulty. Fifteen questions in total. The last two ask for reasoning rather than just an answer: one gives someone else's working to check, and one asks which move has to come first and why. Those two are the ones worth reading properly when you mark.
Marking it
The solving equations lesson keeps a pair of scales on screen throughout, and shows what happens to them when only one side is changed.
