A reverse percentage question gives you the price after a change and asks what it was before. This is the one that catches people, because the obvious move is wrong: taking twenty per cent off a reduced price does not get you back to where you started. The reliable method is to ask what percentage the price you have represents, and work back to a hundred from there.
What is on the sheet
Reductions first, where a sale price is given and the original is wanted. Then increases, where a price including a rise is given. Then a mixed set, so the pupil has to decide which is which from the wording rather than from the position on the page. Every answer in the key is the original amount, and the numbers are chosen so the arithmetic stays clean while the reasoning does the work.
Marking it
If the added back on error appears, it is worth working one question both ways and comparing, which is what the reverse percentages lesson does.
