A free, printable KS3 worksheet on ordering and comparing decimals using place value, with a full worked answer key. 16 questions graded easy to hard for Years 7, 8 and 9, including word problems.
Decimals are ordered by place value, not by length. 0.7 is bigger than 0.65, even though 65 is bigger than 7, because the 7 is seven tenths and the 6 is only six. Once a pupil compares column by column from the left, the whole topic settles. Until then it stays a guess.
What is on the sheet
Comparing pairs first, where only one decision has to be made. Then ordering longer lists, smallest to largest and largest to smallest, because reversing the direction catches anyone who has memorised a pattern rather than a method. The numbers are chosen so the trap of differing lengths comes up repeatedly. The last questions attach units, ordering masses in kilograms and prices in pounds, where a trailing zero in a price is a familiar sight and still has to be read as place value.
Marking it
The ordering decimals lesson lines the numbers up in columns on screen, which makes the trailing zero trick obvious rather than magic.
